Midday Cowboy

I’ve spent the last month trying to put my finger on what exactly made Cuba so bewitching to me as a photographer.  All I’ve been able to come up with so far is that the mix of colors as well as the mix of styles is absolutely unique, and the mix of the mix, if you will, is alluring as can be.  The buildings, cars and people all have a certain “je ne sais quoi,” and when you put them all together they form a gestalt, which simply means that the whole is more than the sum of the parts.

This image is a great example.  It’s just “a man standing next to his car parked on a busy street in Havana.”  The description sounds pretty mundane.  And yet the color and styling of the green car, and the man standing in front of it wearing bright yellow shorts AND a yellow shirt AND a cowboy hat, and even his posture, the way he’s standing with his hip thrust out and his arm casually leaning on the open door of the car…it all adds up to something unique, and uniquely Cuban at that.

  1. Amazing photo! It cold so easily be a painting!

    • Thanks Wendy. Since I don’t have the talent to paint, I’m glad I can make some of my photographs look like paintings… 🙂

  2. Reblogged this on -vida para mi cuerpo-.

    • Hi TII,

      Thanks for the reblog. 🙂

      • You are welcome! This post touched me, I am Cuban, and a photographer as well.

      • TII,

I hope a Cuban photographer can forgive this non-Cuban photographer’s bumbling attempts to describe a complex and intriguing country. At times I feel like I should just post the images… 😉

      • It is your non-Cuban eye, precisely, what makes this picture formidable. Sometimes we are so into our routine that we stop seeing the wonders.

      • Thanks TII.

I was definitely seeing Cuba with “fresh” eyes (and loving it immensely!). A huge part of the delight was all of the unexpected photo ops in unexpected places and at unexpected times. Didn’t someone once say that “travel photography is like a box of chocolates?” 😉

Since you’re reading my blog, I assume you’re no longer living in Cuba, where I hear internet access is painfully slow, expensive, and (worst of all) monitored. It sounds from your blog like you’re in Miami?

I’d love to keep hearing your thoughts about my images (and writing), especially since there doesn’t seem to be any way that Cubans in Cuba can easily access it.

        Guarda la fe,

  3. Another beautiful photo. I love color, and I really love how you use it. The yellow against the green is amazing.

    • Thanks Brian. You don’t do so badly with color yourself. Good luck with the new blog! 🙂
