Lilac-breasted Roller

This is a Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus), and it does indeed like to perch on high branches to look for tasty treats on the ground.

It’s called a “roller” because during courtship the birds will fly very high into the air and then dive towards the ground while simultaneously “rolling” their bodies to and fro and squawking.

It’s called “lilac-breasted” because…well, I think you can figure that out for yourself!  Many people think this is one of the prettiest birds in all of Africa, and I would have to agree.  To me, they look like an artist painted them with an airbrush!  Both males and females have the same beautiful coloring.

In addition to insects such as grasshoppers and beetles, these birds will also eat small lizards, frogs, snails, mice, smaller birds, and even scorpions…

And any bird that will eat scorpions gets my respect!

  1. Those colors are so amazing that it’s hard to believe they are real. Wow–that it is a pretty bird (and a wonderful image).

    • Thanks so much, Mike. 🙂

It IS quite a color combination, isn’t it? Glad I had a blank background and a simple composition or else it could’ve been very busy and overwhelming.
