One of my favorite summer fruits are berries. I don’t think I ever met a berry I didn’t like. But berries are best eaten in season. And despite the marvels of refrigerated storage and shipping that have made berries available almost all year round, berry season was–and for me still is–summer.

If you can find berries that are locally grown, so much the better. And of course the ultimate freshness can only be had by picking your own. If you’re not up for that, then buying them from a produce stand or at a Farmers Market is the next best thing. They’re often picked the morning of the day they’re sold, or worst case the day before.

These strawberries were at a Farmers Market in Central California…don’t they look delicious?
