His eyes are as haunting as his paintings…
This image of Van Gogh was painted on the wall of a coffee shop in Amsterdam. One of the highlights of my time in Amsterdam was visiting the Van Gogh Museum. For me, there’s nothing like seeing an artist’s original paintings, and being able to see the brushstrokes and palette knife marks on the canvas itself. Most people think of the painting medium as two-dimensional, but ask most painters, and they’ll tell you that it’s really three.
When I see how a painter transformed a blank canvas into a masterpiece, I, too, am transformed. I walked out of the museum a different person than I was when I walked in.
Is this crazy talk? Perhaps…which makes it all the more fitting when speaking about Van Gogh.

I too really like Van Gogh and loved my time visiting the Van Gogh Museum years ago. It’s really cool when you find murals on the blank walls of a building, especially outdoors. It’s totally unexpected and adds such a visual impact.

My trip to The Netherlands had a definite Van Gogh theme, and my time in France (which I have yet to blog about) was very much about Monet. I squeezed in as many museums in both countries as time and photo ops allowed. 🙂
I’m also a huge fan of murals, and even well-done graffiti has its place in the urbanscape, IMHO.
Hmmm, maybe I could get some of my photographs painted on the sides of buildings… 😉
