biking to school

How did you get to school when you were little?  Did you walk, take the bus, ride a horse?  Were you lucky enough to have your dad chauffeur you in a bike-barrow?

If the answer to the last question is yes, then it’s likely that you grew up in The Netherlands.

I got a kick out of watching the morning commute in Amsterdam last April.  There were bicyclists whizzing by every few seconds, and each bike was unique and said something about the personality of the rider.

The bicycle in the above image  is obviously designed for practicality.  In addition to carrying your offspring to school, its deep bin can hold a week’s worth of groceries for you and your family, or a week’s worth of their laundry…or even the family dog!

This particular morning, a young girl was getting a ride to school.  How nice to not have to walk and lug a heavy bookbag.  How nice to be able to keep your hands in your pockets on such a cold morning (note:  dad is not that fortunate!)  How nice to get to look around and not worry about running into something…or someone.

I have no idea what this girl’s name really is, but I called her Lucky.
